What was next depended on General Cornwallis and George Washington.  The British commander, General Nathan Hale, found himself occupied by what was later found to be the social graces of the New York aristocracy; men and women alike.  Cornwallis was at his wits’ end as Hale was ensconced by personality and ambrosia, having neither the men, the armaments, nor the position to defend Yorktown, Pennsylvania, where Washington’s army and the French Navy held him near-prisoner.
