ANGELS

There is, in Latin, an adage: “Sine qua non”, (SIN-AH QWAH-NON). It means the crucial requirement, the essential ingredient.  Exactly: ‘without which, there is none.’

The noun for this Latin, in musical theatre terms, is an Angel.  For here, ‘American Road’ lies, on paper, wanting to jump onstage, but essentially needing that fine, almost heavenly hand. That person, that leader of people and ideas, who says to oneself, and eventually, to others, that a project like this needs help–and quite a bit of it.  If it doesn’t get it, it remains on paper.

It is simple. We must ask someone special to invest in our musical drama.

To show anyone remotely interested in this project the return on the spirit of their investment, we are willing to grant that Angel one-third of the potential profit in this grand endeavor. That means our Angel will take the contractual position of the lyricist.

No BS. In writing. One-third, writer, one-third composer, one-third Angel! That’s how important this is to us.

The grand works of the musical theatre consist of scene and song, words and verse, but also, resources, funds, and budget. We are seeking an Angel to embody and fortify the latter. If you are reading this with some interest, or for whatever reason you have happened upon it, please consider the gravity and reality of our message.

‘Sine qua non’.  The play does not play, the actors do not act, the singers do not sing.

Finding resources is usually so much more difficult than the creative work.  Let’s be real: writers and actors and musicians and composers don’t have much money. Certainly not enough to develop a musical production. Instead, if we are truly professional, we have a fine resolve and excellent work habits.

However, we (the composer and I), are a steady and organized team with a fine short-list of directors that would indeed love to sally forth into a field of possibilities! In the world of theatre, of musical drama, things can move very quickly. Why? Because these artists have to be ready for anything!

Solicitation is the bane of an artist’s existence. Mozart’s soul was crushed by it and he died young. Still, in the words of a more recent genius, Steve Jobs, “real artists ship.” That means quite simply, do your best work and then send out word about it as best you can.
